On the subject at hand, I’ve long been advocating for our increased ISR and control of the Arctic. In fact for several years I have challenged the general readership to consider the option of giving up the high Arctic altogether (highest bidder, hand over to the UN for environmental research as per Antarctica) if we weren’t going to take control. For both NORAD and NATO, it is our responsibility to ensure that we know when and where a lemming farts. As for enforcement and defence of the Arctic, we need a layered defence systems capability, backed by trusted allies (emphasis these days on “trusted”). To do that will require frequent military exercises of joint nature with all of these allies. The GoC will have to grow pants and use our defence capability and influence at international tables to ensure that the North West Passage remains as Canadian territorial waters.
