Interesting move. Beyond procurement, this looks increasingly like a strategic signal about Canada’s evolving defence priorities, especially regarding Arctic surveillance, NATO commitments, and reducing capability gaps in early warning systems. The industrial partnership aspect will be just as important as the platform itself. Great breakdown.
I wouldn't bet on the Griphen, as much as I preferred it. At this point it would be an absolute beehive of a political mess, likely one viewed as not worth the hassle.
The F35 is a good aircraft and has Canadain components.
There are other things that wouldn't be nearly as politicized that Carney can focus on. Focus on what can be controlled and work with the rest as best as possible.
although the F-35 is the easy choice. I find it funny that while the US is pushing hard on the F-35, they themselves are buying hundreds of F-15EXs in order to have enough planes operationally available for missions that do not absolutely require the F-35. Kind of sounded like what we wanted to do and got told it was stupid.
Entirely true, the F35 is far from a workhorse and thats what Canada would be better off with. A durable "Swiss army knife" of a jet. Frankly something like the Griphen...
If the world were a simpler less political place maybe, maybe one day...
You read my mind, and part of why Carney came out fully about this GlobalEye one without any pussyfooting, was that he knows he wants to get the negotiation right with Saab than simply just having GlobalEyes as add-ons to Gripens.

Please tell me they're close to having an Air to Air refueling solution for these, preferably before the first is delivered.
Looks cooler than the Edgetail too.
Something's definitely brewing with that F35 deal

With the C130H's retirement at 17 Wing coming soon, that should leave some hangers space available...
