Waitaminute - Back in the mid-1900's the North Pole could be reached via snowmobile. That Ice now looks pretty thin. And open water!? It looks to me that climate change is having an alarming effect.
Don't forget that it is "summer" in the Arctic and the sun is shining 24 hours straight! Come back in December and I bet the ice will be a lot thicker.
