WATERLOO, ON, Sept. 9, 2026 /CNW/ -- Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation (CSMC) today unveiled three advanced nuclear reactor platforms designed to address some of Canada’s most strategically important energy challenges: Arctic sovereignty, defence readiness, scientific research, and future lunar exploration.
The launch of POLAR-1, JAY-1, and ORCA-1 establishes distinct development pathways for applications ranging from remote communities and military operations to space infrastructure, research, testing, and workforce development. Together, the three platforms form a market leading integrated Canadian technology portfolio focused on developing reliable, strategically deployable nuclear power for some of the world’s most demanding environments.
The announcement marks the next phase of CSMC’s reactor development program as its technologies mature toward deployment in increasingly specialized operating environments. While each platform serves a unique mission, all three leverage common capabilities in reactor design, systems integration, advanced manufacturing, testing, and deployment planning.

POLAR-1: Power for the Arctic, Defence, and Remote Operations
POLAR-1 is a transportable megawatt-scale microreactor being developed to provide reliable power and heat for Arctic communities, defence installations, remote industrial projects, and critical infrastructure.
Designed for rapid deployment and transport aboard military airlift platforms including the C-17, POLAR-1 aims to reduce dependence on costly and logistically complex diesel fuel supplies while strengthening energy security in remote regions. The system is being developed for applications where dependable power is mission-critical and fuel supply chains are vulnerable to disruption.
CSMC is targeting first criticality of POLAR-1 by 2028, with fleet-scale deployment envisioned from 2030 onward.
JAY-1: Nuclear Power for the Moon and Beyond
JAY-1 is a compact space nuclear reactor designed to provide long-duration power for lunar bases, scientific payloads, communications infrastructure, resource development activities, and future space industry.
As international investment in permanent lunar infrastructure accelerates, reliable baseload power for lunar night survival has emerged as one of the most significant challenges facing future space missions. JAY-1 is being developed to address this requirement through a compact, high-performance reactor architecture designed specifically for deployment beyond Earth.
The platform is among the most advanced space reactor concepts currently under development in Canada and is sized for integration with future lunar landers and surface systems.
ORCA-1: Building Canada’s Nuclear Workforce and Innovation Ecosystem
ORCA-1 is a next-generation research reactor platform designed to support nuclear research, technology validation, operator training, and workforce development.
The platform is intended to provide hands-on experience for students, researchers, regulators, and industry partners while accelerating the testing and commercialization of advanced nuclear technologies. By providing practical access to reactor systems and experimental capabilities, ORCA-1 aims to help strengthen Canada’s nuclear talent pipeline and innovation ecosystem.
As demand for nuclear expertise continues to grow globally, developing the next generation of highly skilled personnel will be critical to maintaining Canada’s position as a leader in advanced nuclear technology.

The quality of safety, modularity, and indeoendence that the SLOWPOKE (Especially SLOWPOKE-II) provided was a marvel of Canadian nuclear engineering.
We forget, we pioneered this micro and small modular reactor technology back in the sixties, let in flounder past the eighties, and are now trying to catch up to a space where we were once the innovators. From modular nuclear reactors for Maritime operations through technology like AMPS (which you can find material for in our archives!), to Reactors for Space Canada has always looked to nuclear as one of our foundations.
We still are in many ways, and we are still a leading nuclear nation, but we have allowed ourselves to lose decades of gains and development, and are now trying to get back to the threshold we should have executed on two decades ago. Companies like CSMC are among the Canadians doing that, and I hope they succeed.
