Putting the three light battalions under one command rather than having three units operating under three different commanders makes sense. And this wouldn't be much more different than the old Airborne Regt which had three coys; one mostly RCR, one mostly PPCLI and the third mostly R22Re.
They will remain full units - 3 Battalions, each commanded by a LCol, grouped under a Regimental HQ commanded by a full Col (which presumably will rotate between members from each unit). I am interested to see if any Regimental enablers will be added - like a Mortar Company, AT Company, or even a small dedicated TACHEL attachment?
Wow ....this is disgusting . No member of the 3rd Bn P.P.C.L.I. will join this " New " Infantry Regiment . They will Literally walk out and leave the Military " Once a Patricia , Always a Patricia " is not a slogan , its a Creed we Live by and if needs be die by . Our Loyalty is to Our Regiment and to the Crown , everything else comes second . Also getting rid of the 3rd Division " The French Grays / Water Rats " ( which the P.P.C.L.I. is a part of ) is another disgusting act of betrayal , here is a list of the Battle Honours of the 3rd Division the " CAF " leadership has decided to sweep into some dark closet somewhere :

Battle of Thiepval

I mean this from the bottom of my heat F@#% every one who had any part in this and F@#% anyone who try's to spin this in a positive light . You think His Majesty's Canadian Armed Forces had a problem recruiting before ? Good luck getting any one to join the unknown / unnamed / no history / no Colours " 3rd Canadian Light Infantry Regiment " .
Dude... This is pretty much the exact sort of ultra-conservative cap-badgism that contributed to the Army getting into a mess in the 1st place. The world, technology, & military affairs evolve... & The Army & the formations & units in the Army must evolve as well - adapt or die.
1st - re read the release. 1,2 & 3 VP are not going anywhere. 3 VP will be reporting to a different Formation, that is all. (Although I would actually like to see all 3 units in the Light Regiment rebadge... But that's for another time).
2nd - 3 Div uas the honours you attribute to it from WWI & II... But did not fight as a formation in any other conflict. Kapyong was a Bde (composite RCR, VP & R22R), Afghanistan was a BG that rotated from different Force Generating Divisions, etc etc.
3rd - 1 Div has its own history & accomplishments. & For that matter, PPCLI has more of a combat history with 1 Div than with 3 Div. 3 Div is also not going to the dustbin of history. It is being deactivated (if it isn't actually assigned to the sustainment division?) until needed. This has happened multiple times since WWII, most recently up until 2012 ish, when 3 Div was "Land Force Western Area".
4th - the current administrative divisional structures are wholly unfit for the current operational needs & context. They are not fit for purpose. The existing structure needs to die, that the Army be able to get back to being a fighting Army...
Royal Highlanders of Canada (Black Watch) used to have a Cold War RegF Battalion in Gagetown... So they could rebadge to a Regiment with fairly recent RegF history.
Another option (not kilted) is the Princess of Wales' Own Regiment - which would the Light Regiment to an A Res unit in Kingston (relatively close to Petawa). IIRC, POWR maintains Airborne qualified troops, so they would be a good starting point for a Reserve affiliation for a Light Regiment...
3rd Division was inactive between 1946 - 2014. So it definitely does not have any Korea or Afghanistan battle honours. Also, battle honours are only awarded to battalions and regiments, not divisions.
You arent that loyal if whats on your head is more important than your job. The infantry regimental mafia needs to be broken up for this exact reason. 9 single battalion regiments. Fuck this sense of entitlement that things cant change when required for the mission. The UK has folded regiments with 3x the history of the PPCLI into other units with no problems. The the Canadian Guards were rebadged no problem. RegF 8CH and FGH were rebadged with no problems. Why are light battalions any different, they arent even necessarily changing badging and identifiers beyond being brigaded as a quasi light brigade.
I dream of the day where all RegF infantry Battalions have different badges... & Each is a RegF partner of an A Res infantry unit in the regimental family. This is something the R22R, RCR & 12e RBC (in the Cavalry) already do.
I.e. 1 RCR, 1 PPCLI, 1 R22R stay as Reg F Bns (affiliated to 4 RCR, 4/6 R22R... & a new 4 PPCLI).
Then the remaining 6 Bns could be rebadged to Regiments with existing A Res units: e.g. Loyal Eddies, CHofO, GGFG, RHC (Black Watch), POWR, R de Mais, etc...
It doesn't say how many foreigners are going to be in this “newly formed” division
NOR
Does it explain the lack of CITIZENS in the CAF and if this is the main reason of mixing all 3 into 1 because of the EXTREME lacking of people of Canada to serve
What a coincidence to have this happen months before an independence referendum in Alberta. Remember when the Canadian Airborne Regiment was transferred from Edmonton to Petawawa? Right across the Ottawa river from Quebec, and 8 months after the Parti Quebecois won the provincial election.

I was hoping they would give it a better name, hopefully this is temporary

Rebadging them all as a highlander unit would be kinda cool.

Except in the Second World War the PPCLI were part of the 1st Canadian Division fighting in Sicily and Italy.
Many of the list of battles you listed aren't actual Battle Honours and are not displayed on the Colours of any regiment.
There was only 1 Battle Honour authorized for any unit that met the criteria.
If you are as proud as you claim you are of the PPCLI's history you would already know that.
No doubt the Carney government will hire McKinsey to consult on how to restore “esprit de corps” to the military after this move.
