It's a good tactical play. Cause the countries that've signed training contracts with ITPS, particularly need their country's fighter pilots hardened on the Leonardo M-346 platform, like the Nigerian Airforce.
I know people wanted the Snowbirds to fly in jets, but was there enough campaigning to get the M-346 instead of the PC-21 Pilatus?
Canada also might've easily copied Australia based on their last joint conference and picked the same platform the "Roulettes" cheaply use.
Also similar to how both countries shared the F-18 as their primary fighter platforms in a previous time, too.
Great choice. I still have difficulty wrapping my head around the ITPS being located in London, ON. However, after having listened to the PilotProjectPodcast and read https://www.theglobeandmail.com/world/article-with-italian-planes-and-canadian-vr-this-flight-school-brings/, I was impressed by the Leonardo M346 and the collaboration with CAE, whose training system make the M346 an amazing training platform that would be more than suitable for the FLIT role. Snowbirds anyone?
I wish we had gotten these for the Snowbirds rather than the prop-jobs...
