Bae said that it could add up to 96 cells if multi mission bay is removed from the rivers, and 128 if 5 inch is also removed. It's something they offered Australia. My question is realistically what's the absolute limit of vls could the rivers have without major re design but removing the multi mission bay?
I can see the first 10 being general workhorses with up to 48 cells, and the remaining 5 as pure missiles trucks. thoughts?
im curious how they can get to the 48. I can see another 8 in the bow cause the Aussies have done that and the UK have the SeaCeptor there. Maybe another 8 where the SeaCeptor are amidships on the the UK? Thats 40.
they would probably eat into the multi mission bay thinking mid ship, plus likely there would be some design changes. the more we add in vls, the more it eats into the mission bay and more likely more design changes. Depending on how many are added to future batches, it could go from a ASW master with AAW brain to a more AAW focused missile truck type. not really sure..
I think as soon as you eat into the MB its done. Theres no going halfsies there and no point probably if theres no commonality to the bays or having different bays for different batchs just my opinion. So Im skeptical about the addition of more mk41 cells and where they can go. The AUS build should inform greatly. Is it a big deal to build only self defence length mk41s? Does that help? Is it possible?
The Aussie build will definitely help understand on how to add more vls. They've all the hard work, and we should watch very carefully on how those ships perform operationally. Either way adding vls will kill the mission bay, it all depends on requirements and potential conflicts we get involved in. Are we going to expected to do an AAW role?, shoot down BM?, provide strike capability?, it depends on the role the Navy and Government want to project.
Re Q16: if we were to procure small or medium USVs for experimental purposes, could the Halifax class deploy and run them? If we wait for the river class to be operational, I feel like we will be behind the 8 ball a bit.
Re Q14: last I hear was late summer 2026; there are videos now circulating on instagram from soldiers participating in the sizing testing this past week. But, I suspect full rollout to most people won’t be until the fall or spring 2027 much like the new combat uniforms took time to roll out.

depends on how many VLS we can add up front the Aussies added 8 and the UK has 24 Sea Ceptor there.
The UK also has 24 Sea Ceptor amidships
those seem to be the likely additions also depending on the length of the cells. Anything more than that and I think we lose the MB
say right now we load the ships with 48 ESSM and 12 SM2 thats pretty good for a minimum standard esp compared to the Halifax with 16 ESSM
either way something is changing either design or the mission bay get shrunk/changed..
I see maybe
Batch I 3 ships 24 VLS MB
Batch II 9 ships 32 VLS MB
Batch III 6 ships 80 VLS no MB 32 +48
an extra 3 ships to keep Irving going while River Class replacement is designed and chosen
