MDA Space Secures 41 Early Customer Contracts and Letters of Interest for MDA CHORUS™ Data

Momentum with contracts and letters of interest demonstrates growing demand for next-generation Earth observation data ahead of late 2026 launch
TORONTO, May 5, 2026 /CNW/ - MDA Space Ltd. (TSX: MDA) (NYSE:MDA), a trusted mission partner to the rapidly expanding global space industry, today announced at the GEOINT Symposium that it has finalized nine early customer contracts for MDA CHORUS™ data, its next-generation Earth observation constellation expected to launch in late 2026. In addition, the company has received 32 letters of interest from customers across Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Europe, North America and the Middle East.
The contracts and letters of interest reflect strong commercial traction and customer demand for the company's highly trusted Earth observation data and insights that support multiple mission-critical applications, including maritime domain awareness, defence and security, mining, oil and gas, energy utilization and forestry management, among others.

Noah Note: Chorus is the next stage of Earth-Observation capabilities to be presented by MDA, and represents the evolution of the work the company has done on Radarsat, of which MDA was contracted to supply a replacement bus for the constellation as a stopgap between now and the commissioning of the future Defence Enhanced Surveillance from Space - Project (DESSP) constellation.
Canada already contracted Chorus services last year as part of supporting the ongoing Dark Vessel Detection Program. The constellation will comprise of two satellites. CHORUS C is being built off the back of the Radarsat program, and will come equipped with a C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
CHORUS X will be its partner. It is being developed in partnership with ICEYE, utilizing their third-generation satellite bus. It will be equipped with an X-band SAR. To quote a bit on capabilities:
“CHORUS will be able to image at a maximum swath width of 700 km with CHORUS C, and a highest resolution of 0.25 m with the Spotlight mode on CHORUS X.
Both CHORUS satellites will be placed into the same orbit, with CHORUS X trailing CHORUS C by 60 minutes. The orbit will be an inclined, non-sun-synchronous orbit, at an altitude of approximately 600 km and inclination of 53.5°. The imaging time will shift earlier by about 20 minutes per day, allowing CHORUS to view the same region at different times of the day.
The mission has a design life of 15 years, with CHORUS C expected to remain in operation for the full limetime. However, it is expected that multiple versions of the CHORUS X satellite will need to be launched to sustain the full 15 years.”
CHORUS will also come equipped with a Vessel Detection Onboard Processing system (VDOP), allowing it to Identify, observe and Track Maritime vessels and traffic. CHORUS is set to launch onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket sometime this year.


Chorus will likely form the basis of MDAs DESSP bid, the goal of which is to provide a replacement constellation to the existing Radarsat constellation. DESSP is another space project being accelerated by several years. While the implementation phase remains in the 2029-2031 period, IOC has been pushed up from beyond 2035 (closer 2040) to 2035 woth FOC in 2037.
With the age of Radarsat, and the pressing need for modern space-based assets only growing, the desire of Canada to push ahead many of it's space-related projects is a welcomed and appreciated move on thr Feds part.
