Message from the MND: A year of progress in supporting the CAF
Press Release

During my first year as Minister of National Defence, I have had the privilege of seeing firsthand the extraordinary work of the Defence Team. I am deeply proud of all that you have accomplished, and I want to thank every one of you-members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Canadian Coast Guard personnel, and National Defence public service employees-for your service to Canada.
Over the past year, you have delivered exceptional results across every domain, often under demanding conditions and always with professionalism, determination, and purpose. Whether supporting operations and exercises at home and abroad, reinforcing Canada’s presence alongside Allies and partners, or delivering critical capabilities for Canadians, your work has strengthened our country and advanced our national interests.
This year has been defined by commitment, readiness, and momentum. You have sustained operational excellence, supported NATO and international missions, strengthened Canada’s leadership in support of Ukraine, and advanced critical modernization efforts that will shape the future of our defence capabilities. At the same time, you have continued to adapt, innovate, and prepare for an increasingly complex and unpredictable global security environment.
Your efforts are being matched by a renewed commitment from the Government of Canada to reinvest in Defence—and, above all, in the people who serve. The significant funding decisions made over the past year recognize that Canada’s security depends on a strong, modern, and supported Defence Team. Reaching the NATO benchmark of two percent of gross domestic product for defence spending is more than meeting a target. It is a clear statement of confidence in your professionalism, your expertise, and your ability to deliver for Canadians.
These investments are already strengthening our capabilities in tangible ways: modernized aircraft, vehicles, and weapons systems; enhanced maritime, air, cyber, uncrewed, and space capabilities; and important upgrades to bases, wings, and training infrastructure across the country. Together, these improvements are ensuring that the Canadian Armed Forces remain ready, resilient, and capable in the face of evolving threats.
Equally important are the investments being made to improve quality of life for Defence Team members and their families. We have made meaningful progress on military housing, base infrastructure, environmental remediation, and family support initiatives. New pay measures and benefits reflect the value of your expertise and service, and our shared commitment to attracting and retaining the talented people who are essential to operational success. A modern military is built not only on advanced equipment, but on people who feel supported, respected, and proud to serve.
Looking ahead, the demands on the Canadian Armed Forces will only grow more complex. From defending Arctic sovereignty and strengthening continental defence, to countering emerging threats in cyber and space, to deploying seamlessly alongside Allies around the world, the work ahead will require agility, resilience, and resolve. Thanks to your dedication, we are building a force that is prepared to meet those challenges.
Behind every operation, every milestone, and every achievement are the people of the Defence Team. Your leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment are the foundation of everything we do. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your continued dedication to Canada.
I am proud to serve alongside you, and I am confident in the future we are building together. Thank you again for your exceptional work, your commitment to one another, and your steadfast service to Canadians.
