At the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that NATO would begin formal negotiations with Saab regarding the acquisition of up to ten GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) systems.
At this stage, Saab has not signed a contract or received any orders related to the announcement.
NATO has identified the need to replace its existing AEW&C capability as part of a broader effort to modernize and enhance the Alliance's surveillance and situational awareness capabilities. The NATO Secretary General's announcement confirms that Saab's GlobalEye system is NATO's chosen solution for its future AEW&C capability.
“We are honored and proud to support NATO in its next-generation AEW&C capability. We are confident that GlobalEye is the right choice for the Alliance, as it offers proven capability and adaptability, as well as a long-term operational advantage. Today’s announcement clearly positions GlobalEye as the world’s leading solution for airborne early warning and control. We look forward to the next steps in the negotiations,” said Micael Johansson, CEO of Saab.
GlobalEye will enable the Alliance to monitor vast land, sea, and air areas, significantly enhancing NATO's ability to detect and respond to a wide range of threats. GlobalEye combines Saab's Erieye Extended Range radar with a suite of advanced sensors and a multi-domain command and control (C2) system, mounted on a Bombardier Global 6500 aircraft. As an AEW&C system, GlobalEye provides long-range detection with high update rates, capable of identifying stealthy and difficult-to-observe threats, including drones, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic missiles, even in complex environments characterized by significant background noise and electronic jamming.
Saab will now enter into formal negotiations with the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) in order to conclude a contract.

Noah Note: A big win for the Carney Government, who's downselection of the Saab Globaleye at CANSEC was heavily driven by the desire to be involved and become a partner ahead of announcements like this. 10 additiinal Globaleye is the kind of large order that the Government was excited to see comw to fruition. Up to 10 Globaleye will be procured by the Alliance.
Also confirmed today was the interest of other partners, such as Spain, Denmark, Poland and Finland to also renew their Crewed Surveillance capabilities. All of which present additional potential avenues where Globaleye could see success. Poland is already an operator of the earlier Saab 340 AEW&C, while Denmark and Finland have long been rumored to be exploring collaboration with Sweden on Globaleye.
With Canada joining thr Globaleye family, and the Industrial team more officially, the playforms sucsess bevomes part of our Defence Industrial Strategy, amd our exports abroad. When acquiring platforms like this, you assume a sense of ownership and responsibility, especially of you expect economic incentive, to ensure that platform can be and is sucsessful and selling.
As such, we will be following these developments closely as Globaleye is integrated into the Defence Industrial Base officially.
