The contrast between the two nations' coast guard vessels is jarring.

I toured the ship whilst she was in Halifax. The key to that design is that they have created plenty of growth space and weight, making it a very flexible platform. The design also incorporated the unique need of SOF. A very impressive ship.

Hopefully the CCG can engage with their Norwegian counterparts and perhaps arrange for crew transfers.

Scott…I’m not sure they’d want to come back if they did a crew transfer. Two very different ships as our friend above points out. Ours is let’s say…not as nice, prioritizing function over form likely reflecting the differing mandates of our respective coast guards given each countries unique circumstances and geographies. I’m a little jealous thou as their vessel is a real looker.

Yes, Mr. Baranowski, it is a fantastic looking ship. I’m not sure of the size comparisons but looking at the Norwegian ship it looks almost as big as our Rivers Class destroyers.

A quick search reveals its length is 136.4m (447ft). So yeah… it’s big and armed with 57mm main gun and a pair of 50cals too. Makes one wonder if our coast guard should be doing the same ? To date the RCN has resisted this idea as far as I know. Still…I’m kinda thinking we might want to revisit this decision.

The crazy part is that the total cost of the 3 ships in the class is reported as $645 million USD. Hulls were made in Romania and integration and fitment completed in Norway. If true that’s just crazy…that’s like $300 million CAD a boat.
