Agreed. But for Trump, who continuously acts against the national security and economic interests of the United States. The damage he has caused thru his deeds and actions is truly astounding. His appetite for corruption and greed is a bottomless pit. No lines, no boundaries, no restraints. Nothing is off the table. Not at the point of no return…yet…but definitely entering uncharted territory.
Frankly, I would not trust the US for any aspect of our future defence modernization. As Mr. Barnes has indicated, the level of animosity is exceptionally high. I have to assume that NORAD will continue to stand apart from any Golden Dome or IAMD theory. That would be a separate command, possibly bi-national and again controlled by the US as is NORAD in all reality.
Undoubtedly, we will probably acquire more F35’s for two squadrons and an OT squadron. Then we have the right to supplement with any other aircraft - Gripen or a Sopwith Camel. I care not, but our decision. The same for AOTH-R AND its Polar equivalent , the full constellation for defence and other purposes.
You’re over in Europe where numerous militaries blend the F35 and 4.5 generation aircraft and surely they all communicate. There is no reason it can’t work here. And if there are challenges get the tech boffins (as the Brits would say) to make the necessary patches.
I’m so irate at this US manifest destiny goals of having our country as its defence bitch, I’d be perfectly happen to ring up the US with an old rotary dial phone and say “by the way, missiles are headed your way”.
Noah….I hope you will ask our Swedish friends about how they are broadly thinking about the U.S. as it relates to their own defence priorities, Canada, and the wider global picture. Interested to hear how they see the world if you know what I mean.

However these ongoing defence procurements now exist in a broader context which is turning the issue of national defence into a more fundamental question of basic sovereignty. Unfortunately in our case the cause of this uncertainty is also the weapons dealer. At this point some level of trust has to be established before these negotiations can move forward and provide the clarity Canada requires before committing to further defence integration with the U.S. Honestly…I can’t even believe that this is where we are today. Nothing to do now but let it play out and hope sanity decides to make an appearance. So very disappointed in America for electing such incompetent corrupt people to lead their country. Total disaster for the United States. And everyone else around the world.
Agreed. It would be a self limiting approach for a political party to advocate for deeper ties to the US defense industrial complex. If we were to approach sourcing for defense with a range of 20-30% max for any ally, we would be in a far better place than we are today. And those allies would also be more likely to have the same investment strategy and more importantly, similar capabilities and capacities to a more robust Canada. Defense is politics now, and our professionals in defense will be getting the message in very clear terms in the next little while.
The gist now has left the subject of trade to that of sovereignty. We’re at a whole level of animosity right now, by an order of magnitude.

Expect an announcement soon of a final deal with Saab to purchase the Gripen E.
