Hopefully seeing first hand how much more efficient and advanced the Korean ship building is compared to TKMS coupled with touring the actual physically larger and already produced submarine (unlike in Germany where he had to tour an older 212 as there is no finished 212CD) he may come home to announce the KSS-III as the new submarine design for Canada and get busy negotiating the contract. This would go well toward helping him spend the other 7 billion of the addition 9 promised for the 2025/2026 budget. Probably not, but here's to hoping.
Slightly off topic, but I read an interesting article from (I think) US Navy Proceedings where the author was making a case for the US to purchase a fleet of KSS-III batch II subs. The theory was these subs, with their VLS, would be forward-based and provide an initial strike capability against China. They could also free up American SSNs which are over-tasked.
Personally I don't think the US will ever go back to SSKs but I though the premise was very interesting.
Just listened to the new podcast at Vanguard (Hanwa: Ready to deliver submarines and beyond for Canada.) Was very interesting at one point without revealing Korean missions etc.. suggested they may have already operated in the Arctic region (my take from it anyway). Also gave a little more insight into the evolving offer and different fields they are willing to invest within Canada. They also have confirmed that Canada is asking for two shipyard/maintenance facilities one on each coast (east and west) and have included this in the offer.
Yes I listened to it as well, was very informative thank you. Was just pointing out the vague implication they had already operated up north which I found amusing. They don't usually let things like that slip.
Koreans have an interest in the NWP. Im honestly surprised with how open they are about things honestly. Even when ive talked to them, they'll straight up just say the most random things even if I dont ask lol.
Just listened to your podcast again. It was very detailed. I especially found interesting they mentioned partners in Canada to actual build the replacement parts here. Seems they put alot of thought into future war time scenarios and actually future proofing the supply chain and our ability to self maintain our boats should we be cut off from theirs. I find it hard to believe TKMS could match this type of investment for the Submarine alone let alone the rest of what they're capable of offering. Let's hope Carney is as wowed at the manufacturing capabilities as Coulter is when he visits there soon. I think if we could remove the politics from this procurement it would clearly favor the Hanwa bid.
I was also wondering if you're in the near future going to possibly give your take on Canadas future awacs competition and if you feel either the SAAB/Bombardier Global eye or the L3Harris/Bombardier version actually are technologically competitive vs the E7-Wedgetail. No pressure lol. Just curious.
Thanks again Noah. Today I got the news of Stellantis pulling out of Ontario, so the urgency of developing new international partnerships is increasing. I suspect critics will protest Carney’s association with some morally questionable countries like Malaysia. Yet they’re ok with the US which is rapidly evolving into a dictatorship. Trump has even said “some people are telling him” they’d like that.

Agreed. I am definitely leaning towards the KSS-III. I think the 6 tubes and the VLS gives us a great deal of flexibility, much more than the 212CD.

I also listened to it! We went into a bit more detail on our podcast about the Mantinence side of things if you're curious 😉

I did wrote about the AEWCS project! However it was less opinion and more breakdown. So maybe a revisit once the RFI drops eventually?
