In a more dangerous and divided world, Canada is forging stronger relationships with trusted partners. As a NATO Ally with world-leading expertise in energy and technology, Norway is a natural partner.

To deepen our ties and build on our shared strengths, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, today announced that Canada will welcome the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, to Ottawa, Ontario, from September 20 to 21, 2026. During the visit, the leaders will discuss opportunities to deepen the Canada-Norway partnership across key sectors, such as energy, critical minerals, and sovereign technology – including artificial intelligence and aerospace.

Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Støre will also advance Canada and Norway’s defence and security partnership. As Arctic nations and NATO Allies, they will discuss efforts to strengthen security and resilience in the Arctic and North Atlantic, modernise our defence capabilities, and bolster secure and resilient defence supply chains that support our collective security.

Over the past year and a half, Canada and our European partners have been drawing ever closer, and our relationship with Norway is no exception. Bound by shared history, values, and ambitions, Canada and Norway are deepening cooperation in trade, defence, and energy to create greater certainty, security, and prosperity for Norwegians and Canadians alike.

Prime Minister Carney visited Norway earlier this year, where he and Prime Minister Støre agreed to deepen cooperation on trade and investment, space, energy, critical minerals, emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, and security and defence.
Norway is home to the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, with a value of over $3.5 trillion.
In 2025, bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Norway totalled $3.8 billion, including $2.3 billion in Canadian exports and $1.6 billion in imports.
In 2024, bilateral trade in services totalled $1.3 billion, including $424 million in Canadian services exports to Norway and $839 million in imports.
Canada and Norway are part of the Maritime Security Partnership, a coalition of like-minded partners to enhance cooperation in support of collective defence and security in the North Atlantic and the Arctic.
Canada and Norway are fellow members of key international organisations, including the Arctic Council, NATO, and the United Nations.

Noah Note: I have been leading the charge on Norway for about a year now. I love Norway, and I love how close we are without even trying. The relationship between Canada and Norway is obviously fairly deep. I think that we are unique positioned to work with each other given out similar operating enviornments, a host of common equipment (F-35, P-8, Type 26, and now the 212CD), and a mutual desire to coolaborate on Northern/Arctic issues.

We have been slowly working towards defining and expanding on our recent Strategic Partnership, one I will note that was lacking in Defence initially. We're obviously going to be with eachother, whether one likes it or not, through the mutual programs we are apart of. That includes navigating negotiations and the followup regarding CPSP.

CPSP presents right now the biggest thread in the tapestry. It is one that here I am watching for reference on. Everyone wants to conclude negotiations quick, and that includes not just Norwegian participation but the participation of Norwegian Industry. We are already starting to hear of some of the Investments that Kongsberg will be making into the Canadian ecosystem.

We have moved to acquire JSM. We have selected a Norwegian design for the future Midshore Multi-Mission Vessels. We will, again, be hosting a large number of same platforms, and we do expect, despite the German focus, for Norwegian industry to be involved in CPSP.

All this is to say, the sky is the limits, and how fsr we take it remains tied to how deep we view this collaboration, and how we focus on allies and parters we traditionally see as secondary in discussions. CPSP has a large German focus, but the 212CD is as much a Norwegian platform as it is German. We forget that Space Norway was one of the first international partners to sign on to Telesat Lightspeed, another valuable area of collaboration.

All that is to say, I want to see more done here. I want to see more of this brought up, and collaboration in these areas expanded upon.
