A Swedish Delegation will be visiting Canada at the end of the Month looking to expand on Energy and Security ties.
Their Majesties The King and Queen will pay a State Visit to Canada on 18–20 November 2025 at the invitation of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada.
The Government will be represented by Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch and Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.
The aim of the State Visit is to consolidate and develop the close relationship between Sweden and Canada by reinforcing cooperation in the security and defence area and promoting innovation, trade and investment within areas such as the green and digital transition. The State Visit also seeks to strengthen people-to-people ties by promoting cooperation within research and skills supply.
Relations between Canada and Sweden are characterised by a high degree of consensus, shared values and interests, with strong ties between the two countries’ peoples. Our cooperation as NATO Allies has brought us even closer together.
Around 30 Swedish companies, government agencies and other organisations will be part of the Team Sweden delegation that Business Sweden is arranging on behalf of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
An extensive programme is planned for the delegation, including participation in the Sweden Canada Innovation Days conference, which aims to strengthen cooperation between Swedish and Canadian actors in defence and security, electrification and advanced technology.
Sweden and Canada will launch a strategic partnership during the State Visit. It will act as a political framework that aims to further deepen relations and strengthen our capacity to address joint challenges.
The three-day State Visit will take place in Ottawa and Montreal.
Their Majesties paid State Visits to Canada in 1988 and 2006. The most recent incoming State Visit from Canada was in 2017.
Further information about the participants and programme will be published closer to the date of the Visit.
This comes after Secretary of State (Defence Procurement) Stephen Fuhr and Industry Minister Melanie Joly visited Sweden as part of a wider tour in August. A lot of this builds off of the work done there.
The Carney government had pledged new defence and economic relationships with the Nordic countries as part of its party platform earlier this year. That also included a wider Arctic security agreement.
The Nordic states have been a big target for thr Liberal party, rightfully so given the potential opportunities for cooperation and similar situations. I for one welcome these developments, and am excited to see what this partnership includes.
I won't speculate on the procurement or equipment side. It is very rare that we see that from these kinds of meetings, however, they do set the tone and pace for development, as well as the overarching goals.
Securing two partnerships in a month, first with Korea and now Sweden is a welcomed pace. Say what you will but the rate of agreements signed has been substantial. That includes other partners like Indonesia and the Philippines, both of which we've also signed new agreements eith in the last month.
Partnerships are good, and this delegation is massive, the largest in a long-time from what I'm told. This is a big deal, and I do expect some announcements there on new partnerships and cooperation.
Time will tell I guess! I'll keep track of things.
