The Department of National Defence opens world-class defence research complex in Valcartier
Press Release

June 10, 2026 – Québec, Québec – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
On June 8, 2026, the Department of National Defence (DND) hosted the official opening of the Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) Valcartier Research Centre (VRC) pavilion complex.
The inauguration of the new 30,900 square meters pavilion complex marks the completion of a $166 million project and recognizes a major milestone in modernizing and enhancing the research capabilities at VRC. The new state-of-the-art facility, which includes more than 80 new multidisciplinary laboratories, offices, and storage spaces, will improve collaboration among researchers and support advanced defence research and development, contributing to national security and technological innovation.
The VRC is a key component of DND’s science and technology enterprise and one of seven DRDC centres nationwide. It supports the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) through evidence-based advice and applied research in critical defence technology domains, including information systems, optronics, and combat systems science.
The Centre operates a highly specialized infrastructure comprising more than 100 buildings and a seven square-kilometre test range at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier. It includes a secure energetic materials experimental complex, a trisonic wind tunnel, a 240 metre aeroballistic corridor, and deployable mobile laboratories enabling field-based experimentation.
The VCR modernization strengthens Canada’s defence science and technology base and supports DRDC’s continued ability to provide leading-edge support to the CAF in a rapidly evolving security and innovation environment.
As global competition accelerates and emerging technologies reshape the security environment, the Valcartier Research Centre will strengthen Canada's ability to develop sovereign capabilities, deepen partnerships with industry and academia, and ensure the Canadian Armed Forces maintain a technological edge in an increasingly complex world.

Quick facts
DRDC provides DND, the CAF, other government departments, and public safety and national security communities with the knowledge and technological advantage they need to defend and protect Canada’s interests at home and abroad.
A three-phased major infrastructure renewal project at Valcartier, worth $391 million, will see the construction of a 30,859 square metres main complex and a 1,789 square meters garage/shelter, upgrading of 12 buildings, demolition of 49 buildings, and a landscape revitalization.
For more than 80 years, DRDC has been on the frontlines of defence science and technology, conducting research in centres located across Canada.
The new research facility has attained Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification, reflecting its high sustainability standards, using recycled and low-emission materials where possible.
By modernizing and greening its defence infrastructure, DND is supporting the needs of a modern military, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving on energy costs.
The research facility features electric vehicle charging stations and a green roof and will use approximately 38% less energy than a similar-sized building.
