The Department of National Defence Opens Renovated Hangar 14 in Ottawa
Press Release

Today, the Honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defence, attended the grand opening of Hangar 14 at the Ottawa International Airport and announced its rededication in honour of Janusz “Zura” Zurakowski, an aviation pioneer whose contributions helped shape Canadian aerospace history.
The event also marks the consolidation of the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE) into a single, modernized facility, bringing together its personnel, aircraft, laboratories, and engineering capabilities. The renovated facility features approximately 6,600 m2 of modern office space, aircraft laboratories and testing areas, as well as maintenance and storage space, enabling AETE to continue its rigorous testing of equipment and aircraft — work that supports safe, effective capabilities for the Canadian Armed Forces.
The multi year project to modernize Hangar 14, a recognized Federal Heritage Building built in 1955, was delivered with a $93.6 million construction management contract awarded to Ottawa-based Pomerleau Inc. in 2021. The renovation preserves the building’s heritage character while upgrading it to current building codes and Three Green Globes sustainability standards. Approximately 150 jobs were created during the renovation phase, supporting skilled trades and local industry in the National Capital Region.
In addition to modernizing critical infrastructure, the project will reduce emissions associated with AETE operations. The relocation to Ottawa enables greater use of fuel efficient aircraft and simulators for proficiency flying, in partnership with Transport Canada. As a result, the Department of National Defence estimates a 58% reduction in annual greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to approximately 3,000 tonnes.
