Phew, P Res no change to structure thank god. I know I say this knowing someone will chime in saying that Army Reserves needs to change even its structure but you can’t deny how important being a member from X regiment means. Might not mean anything to other trades and occupations that have the same culture and traditions (All the Service, CER’s, RCA’s) but it means so much especially to all the different Infantry and “Armoured”Regiments across the whole of the Army Reserves.
The symmetrical system for the Reserves is objectively dogshit though. Having a half ass infantry brigade in every region makes no sense. BC has the bones for a reserve mountain light infantry brigade for example. As an example, maybe the BCDs need to be reroled into a drone regiment to support that mission set or maybe the BCRs need to be reroled (back) into an infantry regiment to better support the defence of Canada. Maybe the Sask Ds dont make sense as an Armoured independent sub-unit as they have no support bases nearby and a lack of good ranges within 3 hours. We need to assess what we have and determine what we want, then rebuild it from scratch. The current system is useless beyond some OUTCAN augmentees and half assed domestic response companies. We need to build a system that can actually deploy reserve sub-units and maybe even units one day in support of a sustained divisional deployment.
I will concur that units well outside even nearest city or support base currently makes no sense especially when compared to units based in cities. Even from a regenerating standpoint of getting numbers in through recruitment is easier said then done then ur regt thats out in the boonies.
