The problem is that deleting the turret & replacing with a .50cal RWS doesn't result in a light vehicle. Unless we also sacrifice in protection & volume you still end up with a roughly 30 ton APC... Think ACSV Troop Carrying Vehicle, but maybe they cut the roof back down. The "Light" in LAV has always been false. It is Light only relative to something like CV90 (or Boxer now). They are firmly a Medium vehicle.
When you refer to "ALAV", is that the same as the "LAV 6.0 Mk2" that GDLSC displayed at CANSEC in May this year?
The CAF has announced plans to (1) grow the Army and Reserves and (2) add a new armed vehicle (MEDCAV) to the fleet. It would be sensible (and cost-effective) to expand the LAV vehicle family to include ACSV plus two new Mk2 variants - one IFV with the new turret and one infantry carrier with a simpler RWS.
ALAV is both an expansion and a refresh. Continuous Capability Susistainment in action! It's been on the plans for a few years.
They will be new LAV6, no different design wise from the existing fleet. They will slowly integrate new improvements and technologies over the coming years as new batches are delivered. It allows for smaller, incremental improvements over focusing on large, expensive, and risky upgrade projects.
Slowly these new LAV will cycle out older ones, ensuring the fleet can remain somewhat modern and 'new'. The idea is to lock down on a specific number to be delivered per year, also ensuring GDLS-C has some stable form of business coming in. That could be LAV6 MK.II? That was a proposal from GDLS-C, a show of what could be possible.
Mid-2030s the ACSV will get the same treatment, then finally a proper LAV replacement in the 2040s.
Thanks! That makes complete sense with the new, enlightened approach to budgeting and procurement - steady and sufficient funding allows batched procurement rather than "order as much as we can get while there's funding in this year's envelope because we won't get more money after this one due to so many other competing priorities" ... or however you describe the past years' fights to maintain some limited semblance of an army
It's something wamted for a long while, and I'm happy to see it. It's a win for everyone, especially when looking for ways to both generate economic benefit and add more year on year lines to the NATO funding sheet, something many don't think about. Its nice to have steady things.
Wow…. NEW tanks for 2030’s, and CMAR for 2026?? Just wanna see something for my beloved Artillery Regiments soon!! I know that it’s being narrowed in on. The money was already allocated this last year. I just wanna see an announcement come out soon!!
"DEFENCE CONSTRUCTION CANADA (DCC) is requesting Proposals from Design-Build Teams to design and construct the Armoured Combat Support Vehicle (ACSV) at 5 CDSB Gagetown". Surely there's a word missing there? ACSV garage, perhaps?
No!!!! How could they abandon the greatness of a 30mm turret with ATGM and Loitering Munitions for a .50 cal with ATGM
They're LIGHT armoured vehicles dont ya know. They must conform.
But u don’t know the feeling of that 25 going off with the “THUMP THUMP THUMP” now imagine a 30 ;)
You will accept your RWS and you will love her.
I mean technically, if we end up with RiWP down the line....
I mean hey, they could very easily sell RWS to the troops if it’s got a CUAS capability

Sigh…… pouty face emoji…..
100%!! The LAV 3’s in Afghanistan made regular use of the 25mm. It’s an absolutely fantastic setup for what it was used for.

Sounds exactly like something I posted over on Twitter? Maybe someone actually read my threads?
