Great news on the Rivers and potentially the Subs! I wonder if there is any way the first River can be delivered sooner?

The hope is that the experience Irving has gained with the AOPV will help speed up the timelines. Irving’s location isn’t the best for further expansion, but even the current timeline is being relatively open in their estimates.

Further cooperation in the construction phase with the Brits would have been nice to see, if only to get a bit of extra experience.

If we can farm out part of the construction on the icebreaker this sets a bad precedent for the rest of the shipbuilding procurement program. Especially as it’s a one off order.

My initial guess is that this was allowed to squeeze in due to both the pressing need for one by 2030, and the fact that Davie owns the yard.

Davie isn’t ready to start construction themselves. There is still work that needs to be done to prep Lauzon for this. Is it preferred? Unlikely, but sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures.

I give credit though to the people at Davie. They’ve been able to sell the Polar Max design to the navy, and that takes some serious effort. Luckily, both icebreakers were designed by Aker, so there should be at least some commonality in parts and systems between them, although I would have preferably focused on a single design myself.

I agree. In theory the Finns will up skill the Canadian team and accelerate the delivery of that Polar 2 ship, while preparing the Davie Montreal yard. However the details matter. I hope Davie in is investing a ton of their cash in all this and it’s not just the taxpayers funding these moves. On a related note I’m less enthusiastic about Davie setting up in the USA for building ice breakers.

That’s my chief concern here. It’s very easy to say that you’re just going to start production here and then move it once you’re over facilities is up and running. It’s less easy to actually do it. I don’t think anyone wants to see any delays because Davie messed up the transition process.

They’re promising this is five years at most, they’ve previously promised that they could build a Polar Max from start to finish in 36 months. I don’t expect it mind you, but I am hopeful because I know the people at Davie, and they’re very smart and very knowledgeable.

As for the US plan with the Trump administration discussing potentially pulling out of the ICE Pact, I question the choice to invest as well, especially at a time when those same people threaten our claims in the Arctic.

Yes! At this point it’s not entirely crazy to imagine the US teaming with the Russians to build icebreakers in the future!
