I now have much better insight into this subject. Although large HWYs like 401 can’t be built in the Arctic, the residents there need and deserve the same fibre optic networks as we southern Canucks require. Not to mention defence and security needs.
Truly fantastic work and it's refreshing to read interesting articles about the infrastructure we use daily but take for granted. This was like an episode of How its made a old favourite show of mine.
Excellent read, great work Noah! That was an excellent history lesson, & a bit eye opening. For all our technological progress since the Great Eastern laid early transatlantic cables... There aren't all that many more ships doing that today...
Fully agree, high capacity fiber optic cables are a great way to better integrate our Northern communities. Fully support that recommendation. Same with building the 4 GOCO cable layer/maintenance ships. As for the 2 RCN subsea support ships... Do those need to be substantially different than the 4 commercial ships? Could that 1 Davie design meet both needs, allowing us to build a class more efficiently?

Love the history lesson to set the stage and concur with your recommendations. Great article and thank you for putting this out.
