Magellan Aerospace and the Government of Canada Announce Contract to Develop Canadian Production of the M-72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon

Magellan Aerospace Corporation (“Magellan”) announced today that it was awarded a contract from the Government of Canada to produce the M-72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon (LAW) under Canada’s Munitions Supply Program. The contract represents an important investment in Canada’s sovereign defence industrial capability and will strengthen the nation’s ability to manufacture and sustain critical munitions for the Canadian Armed Forces.

The agreement marks a milestone in advancing Canada’s defence industrial strategy by solidifying domestic production capability for one of the world’s most widely fielded and combat-proven shoulder-launched anti-armour weapons. By producing the M-72 LAW in Canada, the Government of Canada and Magellan Aerospace Limited are strengthening national resilience, enhancing supply chain security, and ensuring the Canadian Armed Forces have reliable access to a critical operational capability.

Noah Note: A monumental win for Magellan, who as some might take note is trying to get deeper into the complex munitions game like torpedoes, missiles, and rockets again. No matter what happened on CPSP, Magellan standed to win in some capacity. That was never a doubt, thiugh these plans have been happening concurrently, I do make note that CPSP sets Magellan an opening to do a lot more.

The same supply chain that feeds into Torpedoes, while not exclusive, does help create the framings of a missile ecosystem, if the feds put the time, money and efforr into doing so. Anywho, the M72, a classic system that like the Carl G continues to service Canadians and probably will until the end of existence, god willing.

The newest member of the M72 family is the FFE line, the fire-from-enclosure pair Nammo designates the M72A8 (anti-armour) and M72A10 (anti-structure). They are joined alongside the M72 EC, the Enhanced Capacity variant. What variant will be produced domestically, if there is a specific, has not been said yet.

What you'll primarily see today is the M72A5-C1, the HEAT self-contained round, 350mm of penetration, etc. It is currently the lower-end workhorse of the CAFs Land-Based Anti-Armour/Structure capability, alongside the Carl G and eventually whatever PAX-M decides to get. More M72 have been coming for a long while, same to the new Carl G M4 that have just started delivery.

For the feds, securing Munitions production is one of the key cornerstones of the current DIS, and while M72 might seem minor and mundane, to the Federal government any munitions investment is a win on their books. You start somewhere, and shockingly, true end-to-end Anti-Armour/Anti-Structure munitions remains an area, like many, where we lack.

So I choose to not be dismissive. Any capacity is good, ezpecially when your alternative at this time is nothing. The hope is that even small things can help build for the future
