The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, concluded a productive meeting today in Ottawa with Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye.
The ministers discussed strengthening the Canada-Türkiye partnership, exchanged views on shared security priorities ahead of the NATO Summit, that will be held in Ankara, Türkiye, on July 7 and 8, 2026. They also addressed regional and global challenges, including Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
The ministers also explored opportunities for increased economic engagement in the energy, defence, aerospace, and mining sectors, reaffirming that future cooperation will drive shared security and economic prosperity for both countries.
On behalf of the Honourable Minister Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Canada, Minister Anand also delivered to Minister Fidan a letter for Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, regarding deepening collaboration on energy security.
Noah Note: Should make a note here abour defence and aerospace with recent discussions on Turkish drones. There is a lot of folks who apparently got won over going to SAHA, and Turkish industry is apparemtly eager to get bacl in to the Canadian market.
I can't say how serious that is, after the 2021 Permit suspension and ban things have become difficult to reverse, to put very lightly, and it wouldn't come without scrutiny in ghr current enviornment to reverse course on some of those decisions.
That isn't to say I dont see it, but it is a political convo too. Turkish industry has a lot to offer, and I openly support looking to NATO partners outside the traditional sphere to find partners. However tbis one might be hard.
Interesting in that there was a successful test last week of Italian M-346 aircraft successfully controlling a Turkish drone in flight. Given we are currently negotiating to purchase the M-346 lead in advance trainers….one has to wonder about the Turkish Drone option.
