If Canada were as petty as 'The Biggest Cheese' Colby, this 'pause' of US participation in the PJBD could be cited as a reason to reconsider our full acquisition of the F-35.
Of course, PM Carney is far too wise and calculating for such a snitty response... he's going to bushwhack the US during the CUSMA negotiations with the F-35 v. Saab Gripen E (or CF-39E Arrow II) matter.
Perhaps if everyone acted like mature adults, we could end up with a split fighter fleet and quickly acquire the Boeing-Saab T-7 advanced jet trainer to replace the tired Canadair CT-114 Tutor.
I hadn't heard the suggestion to name the Gripen the Arrow II before, but I like it!
I sure hope there are some adults on the other side of the negotiating table when Carney gets there, because it's going to be so frustrating if the petulant children are allowed to shoot the whole thing in the gut...
A bit of context for what is coming out of the Pentagon:
In early February Trump issued an Executive Order called βEstablishing an America First Arms Transfer Strategy.β The America First [hereafter: AF, my choice] Strategy will ensure that βfuture arms sales prioritize American interests by using foreign purchases and capital to build American production and capacity.β It promised, in 120 days, βa sales catalog of prioritized platforms and systems that the United States shall encourage our allies and partners to acquire. The sales catalog shall be based on criteria identified in the AF Arms Transfer Strategyβ
Also in 120 we can expect βadvocacy efforts encouraging foreign procurement of defense articles produced in America for the purpose of supporting an AF Arms Transfer Strategy.β
The Colby announcement fits into AF treatment in that "advocacy efforts" invariably start with bullying and insults. The timeline for the 120 days is up in early June, so expect more demands to both buy American "platforms and systems" and to invest in the American defense industrial base.
I quite frankly see this as weakness on their part. they sound a bit desperate and why wouldn't they, given their depletion of just about anything in their war of choice and their growing national deficit (and debt).
Ask the Australians about their experience with Colby during the AUKUS talks a bit over a year ago. His grandpa would be so proud of young El...
Thanks for your plain spoken response. I think this just increases the sense of fatigue that people on both sides of the boarder who just want to get shit done are experiences. This is just a bit more grit and friction in a relationship with a sputtering motor, and brakes that were already dragging. I'd love to hear a little bit more about what practical role PJBD has played over the years, and when it's loss will begin to be felt on both sides of the boarder. When you get a chance, of course.
Does anyone have a trend plot of defence equipment export investment (Import vs Export) between Canada and USA since the 50s? I mean, the numbers would kind of speak for themselves here I would think, that is if you can find the data.
Noah might be busy travelling, but *some* of us don't get invited to Korea and can do the real work.
I've got a new full-length piece up today on this for those looking for something more in-depth: https://policyhawk.substack.com/p/pausing-the-permanent-joint-board
Colby moves up the enemy list by doing this when its the middle of the night here and my sleep schedule is out of whack.
Anyways, Hawky basically had the same thiughts as me but more thought out and in greater detail. So go read his piece.

Looking forward to your reporting on CANSEC 2026!

Get some sleep, and enjoy your trip.
You could say its a relationship irritant
An irritating move, let's get serious -
